Can I Lower Energy Costs by Shutting Room Vents?
One of our main jobs in the HVAC industry, whether in the summer or winter months, is to help our customers save energy in their homes. We like to offer our customers services for energy-efficient geothermal heat pumps and ductless systems that will ensure high quality AC and heating comfort throughout the year.
More over, there are methods you can use right now that can lower your utility bills. But closing off the vents in rooms is the one “old trick” that doesn’t actually work. In fact, it can cause damage to your ducts as well as your AC and heater causing even higher energy costs.
Short Fix, Bigger Problem
The vents help direct the air flow into the room, so if you close them all the way it still doesn’t completely stop air flow into the room. Unfortunately, it has an effect on the rest of the ventilation system by causing increased pressure in it.
That means if your heater and AC run on a variable-speed blower, an increase in pressure within the inner ducts will force the blower to ramp up and start draining more power. Not good! On the other hand, if you have a typical single-speed fan, the situation doesn’t get much better, because the intensification of air pressure will mean less air is moved around, so rooms with open vents will experience poorer comfort. There are no benefits from closing the vents.
There can be other possible problems to your unit that range from: frozen evaporator coils, seepages in the ducts, fractured heat exchangers, to even a damaged compressor. Closing the vents is just not the way to go!
